Perennials for Cutting

Actaea simplex 'Hillside Black Beauty'

Fairy Candles, Bugbane
'Hillside Black Beauty' is a classic plant for the moist shady garden. 18-24" clumps of chocolate black foliage give rise to 5-6' spires of fragrant (smells like grape jelly) creamy white flowers in late summer and early fall. This plant has a number of common names, including Black Cohosh, Bugbane, and Fairy Candles. You might also note that this plant was formerly known as Cimicifuga 'Hillside Black beauty' (we also list under its former name) but the genus has been reclassified and is now correctly known as Actaea.
